Nestled in the heart of Johor Bahru, Kedai Bak Kut Teh Hin Hock stands as a vibrant beacon for lovers of authentic Chinese cuisine. Located at 70, Jalan Dato Mohammed Seth, Taman Tampoi, this eatery has earned its reputation through a combination of tradition and flavor, making it a must-visit for both locals and tourists alike.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by the aromatic allure of herbal soups wafting through the air. The restaurant buzzes with life, especially during peak hours, creating an energetic atmosphere. However, diners should be prepared for the heat of the afternoon sun, as the open-air seating does not provide much refuge.
Signature Dishes at Kedai Bak Kut Teh Hin Hock include highlights such as the minced meat tofu and braised pig trotters. The tofu is soft and flavorful; a perfect complement to the harmonious savor of the minced pork that tops it. The pig trotters are tender, embodying that ideal contrast of fat and meat that is wonderfully indulgent yet not overwhelming. The garlic steamed fish has also been raved about—its freshness shining through in every bite, enriched by crispy garlic that adds a delightful crunch.
Yet, the true star of the menu is undoubtedly the Bak Kut Teh, revered for its comforting flavor. However, reviews are mixed: while some praise its rich herbal notes and generous portions, others feel the sweetness may overpower the traditional essence. It's refillable, allowing diners to indulge continuously, but be wary of its saltiness as the meal progresses.
With an evolving menu that reflects the culinary heart of the region, Kedai Bak Kut Teh Hin Hock showcases a commitment to quality and authenticity. The reasonable pricing further solidifies its appeal; many describe their meals as delivering great value for the generous portions.
Despite various opinions on the Bak Kut Teh broth, it’s clear that the side dishes shine brightly. The stir-fried vegetables and the selection of well-executed sides ensure that every meal is balanced and satisfying. This is the kind of experience where each dish tells a story, rooted deeply in culture and tradition.
For those seeking an authentic taste of Malaysia, Kedai Bak Kut Teh Hin Hock promises a satisfying culinary journey. Whether you're looking for a rich bowl of Bak Kut Teh or a plate of dishes that speak to the roots of Chinese dining, this establishment is worthy of a return visit.

We visited Him Hock Bak Kut Teh for lunch with a group of 7 and sampled several of their signature dishes. The minced meat tofu was a highlight — soft, flavorful, and very well done. The braised pig trotter was tender with just the right amount of fat, making it enjoyable without being too heavy. The garlic steamed fish was fresh and well-cooked, with crispy garlic adding a fragrant, flavorful crunch. However, the Bak Kut Teh was underwhelming. The soup was overpowered by star anise, which threw off the balance of its traditional herbal flavor. Also, do take note — the weather was extremely hot, and the seating area doesn't offer much relief. Be prepared to sweat it out, especially during peak lunch hours. Despite that, the total bill came up to RM212, which we felt was reasonable for the quantity and quality. If they can refine the BKT broth, it would definitely improve the overall dining experience.

Had our team lunch here and we ordered mostly their authentic dishes , overall, the food was delicious and definitely up to standard. The bak kut teh soup is refillable, though we noticed it got a bit saltier the more we drank. The fish was fresh and tasty, and the vegetables were well-prepared too. It’s an open-air dining environment, so it’s best to come early or in the evening , the afternoon heat can be quite intense!

Tried this bak kut teh spot recently — the tofu dish was absolutely delicious and the pork trotters were rich, tender, and well-executed. The BKT itself was a bit too sweet for my taste, and I was a little disappointed they don’t offer pig stomach (only 粉肠). Still worth a visit if you like your BKT on the sweeter side, and the side dishes definitely shine.

Food is good, portions are small but two people eat about 78 rm, lunch, came slightly later and found some seats. Atmosphere could be further improved, the aesthetics of the place, washing area and poor segregation of front and back operations, make the place look chaotic and untidy. The guy used his bare hands to catch my snapper. Snapper was ok, decent amount of meat and freshness.

Dropped by Kedai Bak Kut Teh Hin Hock in JB on a weekend morning and the place was already packed with locals and tourists alike — always a great sign. Despite the crowd, service was efficient and the food came out pretty fast. The Bak Kut Teh was the star — herbal, comforting, and packed with flavor. The soup had just the right balance of richness and depth, and the pork ribs were tender and juicy. We also ordered a plate of stir-fried vegetables which were fresh, crunchy, and garlicky — a great side to balance out the meal. The steamed fish was incredibly fresh and cooked to perfection. Served with light soy sauce and garnished with ginger and spring onions — it was clean, flavorful, and so satisfying. The toufu with minced pork was another highlight. Soft and silky tofu topped with savoury minced meat sauce, adding a nice texture and umami kick to the meal. Portions were generous, prices were reasonable, and the flavors were truly comforting. This is the kind of place where you can feel the heart and tradition in every dish. Definitely worth the wait — will return again next time I’m in JB!

No frills local eatery. Clean and good. You know the food is fresh because the cooking style is light and clean. Thus the freshness of the ingredients shine through. There is a large range of fish to choose, from red snapper to grouper. Fresh, with a variety of sizes. Simple steam with delicious garlic soy sauce. For vegetables, the meat sauce is the highlight. Light and savoury, it goes go well with the crisp fresh nai bai (milk cabbage). The reason for my visit is the bak kut teh (pork rib soup). Theirs is the herbal kind. The taste is delicate and does not overpower the taste of the meat. You can tell that it has been boiling for hours. The meat is tender and falls off the bone. Each claypot comes with a few pork bones, pork belly, liver, small intestines, tau kee, and tau pok. Before the food is served, the wait staff with come with a basin of sauce plates. There are 3 general condiments to select from. Bird's eye chilli with dark soy sauce, garlic with dark soy sauce, and lastly, light soy sauce with shallots and vinegar. Overall, it was an excellent experience.

Actually this place got my first impression from its ambience, *Place : the old fashioned coffee shop style like in the childhood times straight away gives out the good food vibes. good parking, easy to find, flat - no stairs or floors. *Products : I ordered bakkutteh, pork leg and veggies, chinese tea. They also hv selection of rice : plain jasmine rice or yam rice. The steam fish and tofu looks yummy but i didnt order. If you try, let me know how does it taste :) All the food hv a sweet taste and i personally doesnt like it, but i can see many people enjoys it. The quality of the food are all very fresh. I think it’s just a matter of preferences. Bakkutteh taste herbal with a hint of sweetness.. The varieties of soya sauce / condiments are also a good choice to pair up with any food we try. *Price : MYR 50.90 can be for 3 people Hope this review is useful .. * Promotions : none

I wouldn’t mind eating here more often if I live nearby. Bak Kut Teh was more on the sweet side but lots of ingredients. For me , the main highlight was the fish. Huge and chunky meat. Place is spacious and many Malaysians having brunches on weekends.
